Our Mission
The Washoe County Education Foundation provides dollars not otherwise available, enabling Washoe County School District staff and students to soar beyond their current levels of performance.
About the Education Foundation
Established in 2001, the Washoe County Education Foundation is a non-profit, private, community-based 501(c)3 organization created by local civic and business leaders. The Education Foundation generates supplemental, ongoing funding to support local education initiatives proven to achieve results and ultimately benefit all students of Washoe County. The Education Foundation is professionally managed and accountable for the dollars it raises to ensure financial resources are well spent.
One of the greatest challenges our nation faces is illiteracy. The cost of illiteracy to taxpayers and businesses is estimated at $20 billion a year and Nevada is no exception to this problem. In the Washoe County School District, more than 39% of our third graders read below grade level (April 2007 Nevada Criterion Referenced Exam). The Education Foundation has embraced Washoe County School District's number one goal that all students are reading and writing at or above grade level by the end of third grade. More than 95% of all funds raised through the Education Foundation directly support the work of improving literacy rates in our schools. The Education Foundation's Focus on Literacy Initiative is a comprehensive literacy project that provides grade level books, after school literacy tutoring, professional development in literacy for teachers, and technology upgrades to schools that fall short of qualifying for federal funding and lack the community resources to enhance academic success.
The Education Foundation also raises funds for critical priorities recommended to and approved by the Washoe County School District as well as priorities of the Foundation and/or the Education Collaborative.
